Moin moin!
I just moved to Hamburg so not really good with German. I am looking to buy a Fujiwara Kanefusa FKM Series Gyuto (https://japanesechefsknife.com/collections/fujiwara-kanefusa-fkm-series/products/fujiwara-kanefusa-fkm-series-gyuto-japanesechefsknife-com?variant=28871167811). Any idea if I can find this somewhere in Hamburg? Or if I do order it from the website, will I have to pay customs at the Hauptzollamt?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
first of all, welcome to Germany! No and yes. Till 150 Euro, including shipping costs, there is no custom fee, but for orders over 22 Euro you have to pay import value added tax, which is 19% of the total cost. Maybe you'll have luck and the order gets through without customs check, but don't expect it. The knife seemed to be not available in Germany, but some guys here have experience with the knife and I am pretty sure, you'll get at least an alternative shop. Maybe one within the EU. Best T

Thanks for the welcome! So if it gets stopped at the customs I will have to pay the VAT if I am understanding this correctly. Just making triple sure cause I am on a limited student's budget.

Hm, things are a bit more complicated... In some cases DHL will perform the customs declaration without asking - and they might charge You some 20 € for their actions. I never understood, why it sometimes happens - and sometimes not. So there is a bit of uncertainty when buying from outside the EU.
If You are really worrying for getting the best bang for the buck, then I'd at least ask here, whether somebody knows an alternative knife filling Your spec (You'd have to tell us, what You search in that case). Changes are, that somebody knows an alternative (I do not, I'm not in Ho-Gyutos...). The second option might be, asking, whether is able and willing to sell You a used knife filling Your spec at a good price.
It's up to You...
Best regards Peter

Yes. Just be sure to not exceed the 150 Euro (with shipping costs). Beyond that, they"ll charge you with customs fee and from this sum plus the import VAT. I forgot to mention this. I guess you'll get the order by DHL (German Parcel Service), which is good. Custom or VAT fees can paid directly to the deliverer. This service will cost you 6 Euro though, but the alternative would be driving and waiting a long time at the custom office, after waiting for the notification letter. But before you order, wait for some other answers. Theo
